"Yes, you can surely do it. Here are the steps-• Begin by turning off your HVAC at the thermostat and from the circuit breaker. • Now prepare the cleaning solution by taking one part of bleach and three parts water in a tumbler. Keep a scrub brush handy. If the stench is really strong, buy a pouch of VindEx. This is a chemically designed solution to kill the bacteria and mold known to cause dirty sock syndrome. • Wear a safety goggle, gloves, and change your clothes before starting the cleaning operation. • Locate the evaporator coil inside your HVAC unit. A panel of the air conditioner would need to be opened to locate it. The location of the coil may vary a bit from model to model. • If the coil is caked in dirt, use your vacuum cleaner to remove the debris first. • Rub the coil thoroughly with the scrub. Move the scrub in the same direction as your coils. Also clean the surrounding area by rendering multiple passes with scrub. • Let the coil and the surrounding area dry. Use dry towel or paper towels to dry it. "
